Mayfield Highlight #12: Jake Holden

Updated: Jul 18, 2020

Hey Mavs! 🐮💛💙 It's been a while since our last Highlight but we hope you are all taking care of yourselves and safely enjoying this summer! Anyone else LOVE going out and playing sports with their friends and/or family during the summer? We're sure that today's Highlight definitely agrees with that statement, but don't take it from us, we'll let him introduce himself! We're pleased to showcase 2003 Athlete of the Year and Olympic Athlete, Jake Holden!

Hello to my Mayfield friends, alumni and community! It’s been a few years since I’ve attended Mayfield but it’s great to have the chance to stay connected with everyone. I started my days at Mayfield twenty years ago in the year 2000, so it’s wild to think how the time flies!

During my high school years some of my favorite memories were made playing on the Football team, but I also was involved in cross-country skiing, wrestling and had a brief stint with the Rugby team before being knocked out in Game 1 and deciding it wasn’t the sport for me! I recognize the dedication, energy and team spirit that I received from my coaches, peers and the school that helped our teams perform and I know it was a great privilege. I appreciate being recognized as an Athlete of the Year in 2003. It helped me to see that I was truly passionate about sport and in pursuing it as a journey and future career later in life.

After graduating from Mayfield I moved out west to Canmore, AB to spend my winters training for Snowboardcross events in the mountains. There, I competed in events throughout the Snowboardcross World Cup tour with the Canadian National Development Team and then the Canadian National Team for 8 years. I was honoured to have had the opportunity to represent Canada in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. After retiring as an athlete of the sport following the Olympics, I turned my sights to coaching, and had a blast working with young developing athletes on the Ontario Provincial Team. My experiences led me back to Canada Snowboard, to a position as Assistant Head Coach and Next Gen Coach last year. This year I now work as a Co-Head Coach of the National Team alongside former athlete Maelle Ricker, a fellow teammate of mine during our time competing and Olympic Gold Medalist.

At the upcoming Mayfield 50 event, I hope to attend and catch up and reconnect with all the familiar faces. I am looking forward to seeing you there!

A huge thank you to Jake Holden for his time to talk to us and for sharing his Mayfield experience, we know we can't wait to see you at our Mayfield 50 event either! Well Mavs, that's it for this week but stay tuned to our channels for more fun stuff coming at you later! Have a great weekend and stay safe! -The Mayfield 50 Communications Team 💛🐮💙
